Increasing the DFS-R Staging Directory

May 1st, 2008

If you are using the DFS to sync large amounts of data then you may have seen Event ID’s 4202 & 4204.  This is likely because the staging directory is filling up.

When the staging directory fills up completely, the sync’ing will stop for a while and restart again.  This can make the whole process very long if there is a lot of data to sync, ie it keeps stopping and starting again.  So, one solution to this is to increase the size of the staging directory so that this is less likely to happen.  Increasing it by 50% is a good place to start but make sure you have enough disk space before changing anything.

To change the staging directory quota, do the following :

Open DFS Management

Expand the ‘Replication’ section on the left hand side

Click on the replication group that you wish to change

Click the ‘Membership’ tab on the right.

Find the replicated folder you would like to apply the changes to.

Right click the folder and go to ‘Properties’.

Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab and you should see a ‘Quota’ setting.

Adjust the setting according to what you need.  (The default is 4096Mb)

Hopefully this should stop the DFS from stalling, or at least make it less frequent, and so the sync’ing should be smoother and faster. :)

Reorganising the Front Page

April 29th, 2008

I’ve done a bit of work to the links on the front page, which hopefully will simplify things a little.  Rather than have a level for the Event ID followed by a page for the source of the event, I’ve put it all down onto one page.  This means there is more stuff on the front page but at least all the information is there for people to see.  If it becomes to cluttered in the future I might do another re-org :)

So the format of the links is now [[Event ID : 9999, name_of_the_source]].  Then this should take you directly to the page with the information.

Please feel free to comment if you have any thought about the chnage.

Now with Forums :)

April 17th, 2008

Yes, we now have a forum on the site.  It’s not very exciting yet, but it a place to ask questions so please do.

Unfortunately the wiki logins don’t sync with the forums yet, so you will need to create a login for both.

Enjoy!

Twitter Groups For SysAdmins

April 14th, 2008

For all you sysadmins with a twitter addiction, I have created a few groups for people to join….

@sysadms, @windowsadms, @linuxadms

So, if you are interested in joining the group(s), then follow the links and click on ‘follow’.  Then all you need to do is send a direct message to the group and it will go out to all the members. ie "D sysadms Some message text".

If anyone has any ideas for more group, I’m happy to create them.

Pasting Details from the Event Log

April 10th, 2008

This a really simple little tip that I learnt today……

If you go to the event log and double click an event you are looking at, it will bring up all the details of the event.  Then, if you click the little icon on the right hand side of the window, it will copy all the details of the event to the clipboard.  Wow, so simple but I had never spotted that!

This is dead handy if you creating a new page on the wiki :)

Then click install.

Then go to the search box in the top right hand corner of the window again, and select ‘Event ID Wiki’.  Then you can add event id’s into the search box and get results from the wiki!

Spring Cleaning the Event Logs

April 2nd, 2008

Now that I am getting email alerts from the event logs, I’ve noticed that there is a lot of odd little errors.  They are nothing serious, just a lot of ‘8032, Browser’ errors.  So, for the next week or so I’m going to make it my mission to remove some of the ‘noise’.  The 8032 errors are a good start because they are a pretty common one, and hopefully they should be easy to debug.

Of course, all of this will go on the wiki :)

Wish me luck!

How to Advertise this Site??!?

March 20th, 2008

How is this done?  How do I go about getting people to notice this thing?

The site is getting a little bit of traffic, but it’s will only work if there are people contributing to it, so I need to get eyeballs on it.  I’ve emailed a few people about it, and the guys at Casting from the Server Room mentioned the site on the podcast which was awesome thanks guys.  I don’t want to go spamming newsgroups and blog comments with an ‘Ad’. so how do I go about get the right eyeballs on the site.

I have spent a few $’s on Adwords but I’m not convinced it’s doing anything.  The amount of click throughs is in single figures :(

I suppose the main thing that’s going to help is more content on the site.  I’m putting on anything I come across, but that’s only a limited amount, and I would really like it to be a community thing rather than just my notes etc.

If anyone has any suggestions, pleeeease feel free to comment!
